USA against confiscation of Russia's frozen assets

It was reported that the Donald Trump administration did not welcome the European Union's plans to seize Russia's frozen assets. Washington is of the opinion that such a step could prolong the war in Ukraine and weaken the West's negotiating power over Moscow.

European countries are waiting for intervention
On the other hand, it was reported that some European countries, including Italy, expected the USA to intervene in the process instead of openly opposing the initiative.
EU members are afraid that the confiscation of Russian assets will damage the investment environment and damage the credibility of financial institutions.

White House Deputy Press Spokesperson Anna Kelly, on the other hand, distanced the allegations based on anonymous sources. Kelly stated that the stance of both Ukraine and Russia on frozen assets is clear.

300 billion euros frozen
With the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, G7 countries had frozen approximately 300 billion euros worth of the Central Bank of Russia. It is known that 190 billion euros of this amount are in the Belgian-based Euroclear deposit institution.
With the revenues to be obtained from these assets, the European Commission aims to transfer a resource of 210 billion euros to Ukraine for the years 2026-2027.
There is a difference of opinion within the EU
Although an agreement was reached among the members of the European Union on the indefinite freezing of Russian assets, no unity could be achieved on the use of the funds. According to the Euractiv news site, in addition to Belgium, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, Bulgaria, Malta and the Czech Republic stand against the confiscation attempt. These countries argue that alternative ways such as joint borrowing should be sought to support Kiev.
Belgium rejected the security request
According to the information reported by Politico, the European Commission offered financial security to Belgium against possible lawsuits that Russia could file. However, the Brussels administration rejected the proposal on the grounds that this proposal would not compensate for the disproportionate risks to be faced.
Despite this, an EU official stated that there is no option other than Russian assets to help Ukraine and that this goal will eventually be achieved.
